Memento Mori

52" x 70"

This quilt was inspired by my friend @magicalraialexandra who works in the "death positive" movement, including end-of-life midwifery, death doulas, and the world of green burials. She hosted a monthly gathering called La Petite Mort Death Salon where we discussed celebrating life, honoring death, and helping yourself and others through the grieving process.

I've found it's particularly helpful to attend these meetings when you're not in a time of grieving, because it gives you the skills and vocabulary to support your friends and loved ones when they experience a loss. I used to be nervous about saying anything to someone grieving, because I "didn't know what to say." Especially if it was someone I might not know particularly well, or if they had posted on social media and I didn't think anything I could say would be worth commenting.

But I've learned it's not so important to say the perfect words (there probably aren't any), as it is to just say something. Anything kind and from the heart will do. And those simple words or comments on a post can be more meaningful to a grieving person than you realize.
